About Chiropractic

Chiropractic

chiropracticThe roots of chiropractic care can be traced back hundreds of years. The Greek physician Hippocrates published texts detailing the importance of understanding and caring for the spine.

Chiropractic care focuses on the relationship between the nervous system and the structural system of the body-the joints, bones, and muscles. The theory behind chiropractic care is that misalignments of the spinal joints and muscles can cause nerve pressure and irritation, contributing to pain, restriction of motion, and general disease. This keeps the body from functioning at its full potential.

Using natural, hands-on techniques, your chiropractor manually adjusts the spine and other areas of the body into proper alignment or motion. Research has shown that chiropractic care can be effective for treating back pain, neck pain, and headaches. Doctors of chiropractic also treat other areas of the body, including knees, hips, and shoulders.

Chiropractic medicine emphasizes holistic care and the importance of the relationship between your health, your lifestyle, and your state of mind. It is designed to be noninvasive and to support your body's natural healing abilities. Chiropractic medicine focuses on preventive care and on treating the underlying cause of illness rather than the symptoms. Your practitioner will emphasize hands-on care and will encourage communication between you, your practitioner, and your primary care physician.

What to expect at your chiropractic visit

Chiropractic care focuses on the spine. When the spine becomes misaligned, the flow of information from the brain to the body can be distorted. This keeps the body from functioning at full potential. Your chiropractor will gently correct misalignments and muscle restrictions, which will allow your nervous system to coordinate your body and its functions more smoothly. Your chiropractor will correct these mechanical problems using hands-on techniques that include stretching, gentle pressure, and rapid movement. You may feel relief after a single adjustment, but long-lasting conditions usually take multiple visits to achieve good results.

Research has shown that chiropractic care can be effective for treating lower back pain, neck pain, and headaches. Many chiropractors also treat conditions such as osteoarthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, and strains.
